CPC is excited to announce the addition of Marc P. Bonaca, MD, MPH as CPC’s new Executive Director and Director of Vascular Research at the University of Colorado. Dr. Bonaca is also being named as the first holder of the William R. Hiatt Endowed Chair for Cardiovascular Research.

Dr. Bonaca joins us from a successful tenure at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the TIMI Study Group. One of his crowning achievements is his successful award of a multimillion dollar American Heart Association grant for a collaborative Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dartmouth Hitchcock Center as part of a Strategically Focused Research Network (SFRN) in peripheral artery disease (PAD).

Dr. Bonaca is best known academically for his contributions that have advanced the knowledge of vascular medicine in multiple TIMI clinical trials. He has focused on the use of novel antiplatelet and lipid lowering therapies to reduce risk in patients with atherosclerosis and particularly with PAD.  Through his work at TIMI,  he has focused on vascular outcomes including limb ischemic events in PAD as well as venous thromboembolism.

At Brigham and Women’s Hospital, he created the Code Aorta program, which has helped save the lives of patients stricken with dissection of the aorta. In conjunction with this multidisciplinary effort, he created and has run successful and popular quarterly supper programs that cover all aspects of thoracic and abdominal aortic disease. These meetings have attracted standing-room-only attendance from vascular medicine, vascular surgery, cardiac surgery, and cardiovascular imaging. He also initiated a series of meetings that stimulated collaborative clinical and translational research across multiple sectors of Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Bonaca will transition into the leadership of CPC with the goal to broaden the reach and impact of CPC’s clinical trials and community health programs.  He will also be an active clinician in support of the vascular medicine and aortic programs and lead the vascular research efforts at the University.
